ABOUT BROCK JEKILL
A digital rendering of Brock, who is calling your Codec!
Hey! This is the about section! Wow, exciting. I've got a somewhat eclectic résumé, as you can see below, but it can all most broadly be summarized as an interest in the thoughts, dreams, and histories of humanity. From writing and philosophy to cooking and agriculture, humans have been producing truly amazing things for tens of thousands of years, and I am just as wont to wax lyrical about the agricultural genius of the domestication of potatoes or the production and use of salt in ancient cooking and idioms as I am about the literary and philosophical genius of Ulysses or Thus Spoke Zarathustra. I am of the opinion that we are the inheritors of unimaginably rich histories, much of which we have yet to fully discover, and I think it is upon us now to earn that gift not only by creating new works, but by learning from the terrible truths that are just as relevant and indelible as the beautiful. A new world, and a better world, is not only possible, but demanded of us by everything we have been given; the Zapatistas call for the creation of Worlds of Many Worlds, and I believe such places have been and can be built. I hope not to be too didactic here, and humour and levity are just as much a part of and crucial to these worlds as (in fact, hopefully even more so than) any heavy-handed polemics; much of the work that I do is "unserious" in tone and style, but one of the great mistakes of our time has been equating an "unserious" tone with apoliticism; you might not care much about politics, but you're still doing it every day one way or another. I hope in my work, and in this space, I can in some way both contribute to the brilliant nebula of earthly works and perhaps even ever so slightly nudge the wheel of culture and history in a more just, free, and equal direction. Some of my primary interests include literature, especially literary fiction and genre fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, horror), linguistics and semiotics, philosophy, politics, comedy, history, theology, archeology, cooking, visual art and graphic design, agriculture, and just about anything that people have spent their limited time on earth producing, the stranger the better in many cases.
